The week began with a ceremony honoring the National Teachers of the Year for 2020 and 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 awardees were recognized alongside the 2021 Teachers of the Year.

The ceremony was hosted at the White House by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and ended with advocating for education with congressional members at the Capitol.

“It was such an honor to represent the state of Arizona as the 2020 Teacher of the Year during Washington week,” said Stant.

“It was a whirlwind adventure, but one I will never forget. My advocacy focus was humanizing Indigenous teachers and classrooms and asking members of our government bodies for their continued support on issues that matter to schools on tribal lands. The work doesn’t just stop here. The advocacy work continues.”

Salt River Elementary School Principal Dr. Amanda Guerrero said that she is so proud of Stant and all she has accomplished in her role as the 2020 Arizona Teacher of the Year.

“Her tireless advocacy for students and teachers is so important to education, especially when it comes to Indigenous students, teachers and curriculum,” said Guerrero.
